Here’s the inside scoop on the Book Collections app:

When we first started talking about making an app that would give people the features they missed from the old Kindle book collections, people told us it was impossible. The thing is, they’ll never know how close they were to being right. There’s a reason why Amazon hasn’t added book collections to the Fire in the 9 months since the device’s release and why there’s a 0% chance of them ever adding it. It’s not that they didn’t want to, it’s because they were UNABLE to. We knew we had to independently do this ourselves if it was ever going to get done.

When our programmers first began working on the app, it immediately became clear how the restrictions and limitations of the software prevented us from getting this done. The obstacles were numerous and overwhelming, but after a grueling amount of work we were able to find solutions.

When you first open the app, it’ll scan your drive and display all of your book files in an unsorted section on the main page. As time goes by and you acquire new books, you can tap the menu button at the bottom to scan them in. There are some starter folders at the top, which you can use, rename, or delete. Tapping on any book allows you to rename it, add author data, move it into a folder, or hide it from the app.

In addition to being able to organize everything, the app also features the ability to open up books for reading, which was long thought impossible. The only catch is that the Fire’s Kindle e-reader is unable to remember any information after you leave about where you stopped reading. When you’re done reading, you can hit the Back Arrow button where you’ll see a pop up menu that’ll allow you to quickly record your Location and % in the book. Then when you want to read again you can just flip back.

We’ve heard from people every single day since the Fire came out that they wanted to be able to organize their books, and we knew this was something we could do to help everyone get more enjoyment out of their Fires. We’re the #1 Kindle Fire resource for a reason, and we’re proud to be able to bring this to you. Early feedback on the app has been very positive. It gets the job done.

We hope you enjoy the Book Collections app! Remember: get it now, write a review, and there could be Gift Cards for you to win! Today’s a great day for the Kindle Fire!

Sincerely,
The Kindle Fire Department Team

    1. Hi Cathy, some people do seem to be having issues with this. We're looking into it and will try to get an update out as soon as possible. We'll be making a tab tomorrow with news on bugs and fixes. Sorry and thanks for being patient!

    2. I am having the same problem! I thought it was because I have too many books (almost 2000). I hope this is resolved soon as I am eager to FINALLY be able to organize my books! This way I can easily find my kids books, cookbooks, self-help etc in a matter of seconds!!
Thank You for this App and any info on this being resolved!

  5. Hi folks, this is great, I really appreciate all the work that went into it. Really simple so far, but one thing I can't figure out is how to organize my folders and how to delete a few of the starter folders that I won't be using. I don't see instructions anywhere. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Scout, you're right that there really isn't a way to arrange the folders, but if you go into a folder, hit the menu tab, and then go to Edit, you can change the name of the folder to something else if you like. :)

    1. Thanks, lilblue. You can edit in the author's name and then make a folder named after a particular author.

  8. Cathy...I'm having the same problem. When I opened the app, it did not scan my books and put them anywhere. When I click scan, I get a message saying it stopped unexpectedly. Try again. I do with the same results.

  10. Must say a little bit disappointed in the app...would not have purchased it had I realized you can only organize the books that are installed on the device and not on the cloud. Have way too many books to have them all on the device as 3 people use our kindle fire. Oh you can put them on the device and then use the app then delete them again but what a pain that is when you have well over 1800 books on your cloud

    1. I'm very sorry to hear that, Deb. Unfortunately there's no conceivable way that an app could feasibly access your account on Amazon and let you organize your books there. While you may like that, most people would be furious at the invasion of privacy.

  11. The app is pretty nice. I've posted a review at Amazon. Is there a way to put a book in more than one folder?

    1. Thanks, Anne! Unfortunately putting a book in more than one folder is not possible at this point.

    2. Ok, that's not a problem. I just wondered if I was missing something.

  14. I read some good reviews and some bad ones on Amazon. Have you fixed the problems that causes this to freeze up or not scan the book titles? I'd like to get it but not if it's going to be another frustration! Thanks.

  15. I don't want to rate it negatively in app store, but it does nothing but 'Force Close'. Repeatedly. After uninstalling and re-installing and rebooting. Nothing but 'Force Close'.

  16. I was very excited about the app. Are there instructions anywhere? I can't figure out how to add book folders. Any help is appreciated.

  17. It does not work for me either - when I try to run a scan it crashes.

I even did a power cycle and that did not help.

  18. I love the idea and have purchased the app. My problem is that it keeps freezing up on me. What sort of solution do you suggest?

  19. I can't even get the app to finish scanning my Fire when it is installed. Keep getting a forced close. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. Even powered down and that didn't help. Hope you're working on a fix for this.

  20. I'm very sorry for the trouble, everyone. Yes, we are working to get this fixed already. It's just a matter of time. Thanks for being patient!

  21. Thank you for this. We're the beta testers and that's fine with me. I assume any upgrades/fixes will be free. I am so happy that you've done this. I wonder what the differences are between the Fires that run the app correctly and those that don't. My books are not on the carousel; maybe that's a problem? Probably not since the app seems to scan everything on the Fire. Looking forward to the fix. Thanks again!

  22. I keep getting this error message when I scan. "Sorry The Application BookCollections(process com.kindlefiredept.bookcollections) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

What's up? I just purchased this app yesterday and can't use it now.

  23. OK... post #2.
This app does not work for me.
There is a "folder" for Author, Recent, and Title. On the favorites, why can you not include "read" "favorites" "ignore" "whatever" just the same way so we can file books accordingly?

Since I've already spent my $$ for this app, what is my option for making it work for me?

I'm encouraged someone is working on this option, but distressed because I've paid and it doesn't work.

    solutions?
    I'm waiting...

    1. m, if you enter a folder and tap the menu button, choose the Edit option to rename it. We're very close to having the update done, but just one nagging hurtle remains. We'll be keeping everyone updated and hope to have it available soon.

    2. Good to see your team is being so responsive to those of us that paid for the app... it's been a long time since I've been a beta tester... and one of the few times that i have paid for the privilege. I am having pretty much the same issues as everyone else, the only real question i have is this: Is there an email list somewhere that i can subscribe to and be informed when a new release is out? My only other question is: are you POSITIVE there is no way to put a thumbnail of the cover on the gobbledygook file names? Amazon can obviously do it... can you add that funtion? Of all the omissions, that one affects me the most.

      Thanks!

    3. Hi Dave, very sorry about the trouble. If you want to leave your email in a comment I'll be sure to let you know when it's available (and delete your email from the blog as soon as I record it). As for the title names, this new version should be much better about that, even pulling in the author's names. I can't fathom a way to display the covers at the moment, but we're going to be continuously looking for ways to expand the functionality of this app as time goes on.

  24. I really wish this app (that I paid for) would work. I'll be in the middle of moving my books when I get the message that the app is not working and will force stop. This happened several times this morning, and finally would not show the unsorted books. I had to remove the app - which caused me to lose all the work that I had done - and reinstall to begin again. Now, I'm getting the error message again. These problems need to be fixed, please!
